Celebrities are cool, but sometimes, real people can teach you even more. Here are some amazing stories from our patients. Plus, they are really cool people, too. If you have a health problem, you will likely see someone else in there that has already got better.
How does chiropractic work so well?
Chiro Secret #2: Your Spine Controls Everything
- The spine protects your nerves. Your nerves go to your muscles. Your muscles control everything else:
- your smile
- your eyes
- your movement to get food, eat it, swallow it, and digest it, and move it along
- talking
You probably get the picture (almost everything)So here’s the skinny on your spine. The University of Boulder, Colorado found if your spine deteriorates, your nerves can lose up to 60% of their ability, so guess what suffers the most? Your muscles, then you guessed right, everything else slows down. Here’s the ringer. It happens very gradually. Only the big traumas like falling or car accidents will you notice things quickly.
Having your spine move correctly makes all the difference between growing older gracefully or moving slowly and living on pain pills. You might have seen some people like that!
Chiro Secret #3: Does it work?
There has to be something great going on for so many atheletes and celebrities to use it and for chiropractic to have survived for more than 100 years. There really isn’t any question any more about whether chiropractic helps people. It clearly does, but the ultimate question is…
Does chiropractic care make you healthier?
It was really a scary question because the whole foundation of chiropractic is based on that question. Two researchers set out to topple chiropractic or make it rock solid. They actually used kids for this study. They looked at 200 kids from chiropractors and 200 kids from pediatricians and went head to head. Here were the results:
- 20% fewer kids used medications with chiropractic care
- Almost 50% of the chiro kids never needed an antibiotic while only 12% of the other kids didn’t use antibiotics
- 17% less kids with tonsillitis with chiropractic care
- The most important one of all. The #1 reason kids end up in hospitals
- Ear Infections—-70% of the chiro kids never had one.
- 80% of the pediatricians kids had them
“ This has shown that children raised under chiropractic care are less prone to infectious processes…, and that their immune systems are better able to cope with allergens such as pollen, weeds, grasses, etc. as compared to children raised under allopathic care.” (Allopathic just means medical care)
Since 46% of children in school surveyed have back pain, and back pain is a tell tale sign that there is something wrong. So there are a lot of kids out there who could benefit from seeing a chiropractor.
Chiro Secret #4: How does trouble start to brew?
Your body takes trauma throughout life. It can be a big trauma like a car accident or hitting a tree skiing. I take some trauma in taekwondo sparring class every week, but most traumas are smaller and slower in action.
They can take years to develop, like carrying a child on the hip for years, or sitting in a crooked chair, or sleeping on a bad bed, or doing a repetitive job all day. Eventually the body can no long compensate, and pain or dysfunction sets in. Pain is a warning that something is wrong.
I can tell you from personal experience that a solution can exist right under your nose, and with the hustle and bustle of activity, it is easy to miss. I was the clod who didn’t realize our adjusting table was slowly breaking down over 10 years. And yes, it was due to a misalignment, how funny is that? I was so busy adjusting people I missed any early warning signs.
I actually had a patient point out how ironic it was that my table broke because of a misalignment. Luckily, the table is made of metal and it could be welded. I pulled the hydraulics apart, realigned them, and voila, it works smoothly again.
There was an interesting lesson in this misadventure.
Misalignments take years to show up. It took our table 10 years and thousands of up and down trips to wear through the metal enough to break. Our table ran rough and it sounded like metal scraping, and that was after I got it welded.
The spine and other joints act the same way. It takes 10-20 years of wear and tear on misaligned bones before they start to show signs of stress on the joints.
Some key things to watch for:
- Tingling in the hands Nothing gets people’s attention more than their hands falling asleep.
- Shooting pains across the back or down the legs.
- Grinding noises anywhere Your joints are just like our misaligned table. They are deteriorating and getting rough. Don’t wait until everything goes haywire. These are warning signs.
…Alas, the spine isn’t metal. You can’t weld it back together. It has to heal from the inside out. All health comes from the inside, so it can take time to heal. Our table got welded in a couple hours, but the spine may take a couple of months to heal.
It is fun working on new patients who have never been to a chiropractor before, because they are often surprised at how good their body feels once their spine starts working better. Why do you think all the best athletes in the world see chiropractors and 9 out of 10 chiropractors get adjusted every week.
Chiro Secret #5: Is it safe?
I hear this one all the time. “It sounds like my bones are breaking!” I have yet needed to call an ambulance. What you are hearing is gas being released from your joints as we adjust you so quickly. The more you hear the more gassy you are. The more you need to come in and get those joints working better, so they don’t keep breaking down into arthritis.
T.V. loves to hype that chiropractors may give you a stroke by adjusting the neck. But that is just what it is, mostly hype and scare tactics. Don’t get me wrong, there are risks to getting adjusted, but let me give you some perspective. The chance of a stroke is 1 in 5.85 million adjustments. I’m busy, but not that busy. That would be like me practicing 1430 years. I’m healthy, but I don’t think I will live that long. You actually have a higher chance of being hit by lightning, bitten by a shark, or dying in a car crash, than having anything bad happen here.
Let me give you the alternative to think about. About 290 people die per day from medications. That’s a low estimate. Medications account for between 100,000 and 777,000 injuries and deaths per year. Your chances from dying from taking aspirin and getting a bleeding ulcer are about 1 in 1200.
Chiro Secret #6: How does pain go away?
Joints that don’t move correctly – HURT! Joints have to be loose and flexible to be healthy and pain-free. When you hear that noise when you get adjusted, you know those joints were stuck. The healthier the joints the less noise you hear. Kids are the perfect example, their spines make very little noise, when adjusted. Yes, KIDS have problems too! All three of my kids were adjusted the first day they were born.
If your joints are healthier ? your nerves will be healthier ? then your muscles will be healthier ? then your body will be healthier ? and so on ? and so on ? and so on ? and so on ? as the body improves, pain goes away. Go see any chiropractor and they can find those stuck joints.
Advanced Chiro Secret #7: Beyond the pain and straight to the brain?
This is the only study of its kind. A chiropractor and a PhD. decided to work together in the Miami School of Medicine to find out if an adjustment to correct a spinal problem (subluxation) could in fact improve your state of well-being. They used people with “Reward Deficiency Syndrome” in normal language that is a person who has no state of well-being. Essentially it is an addictive personality (could be smoking, alcohol, drugs, carbohydrates, or even chocolate).
The first group had group therapy and usual medical care
The second group had the same therapy but added chiropractic adjustments
The third group had the same therapy, but added FAKE adjustments.
- Group 1 (the usual care group) only 56% completed treatment.
- Group 2 (chiropratic) 100% of patients completed the treatment.
- Group 3 (fake chiropractic) 75% completed treatment
NEVER in the history of psychology has 100% completion been accomplished before, no matter what psychology, drug, or medical treatment was used.
They also proved that Chiropractic is NOT a placebo effect.
The fake chiropractic adjustment group had the worst anxiety scores. While the real chiropractic had the best anxiety scores. The chiropractic group’s depression also went down in 4 weeks to a level that normally takes medication 1 year to achieve.
This study was a landmark study showing that chiropractic care had a significant improvement on the state of well-being of the patient.
